Outdoor Activities & Sports

Exploring on a bicycle is an unexpected and fun way to see Massachusetts. And our rail trails, which are former railway lines that have been converted to paths, are ideal for taking in all the sites and scenes.

Check out the New Balance Hubway, the Boston bike sharing system. Best of all, whether you're a novice or experienced cyclist, you'll find a wide variety of rail trails throughout the state to choose and discover. Pedal through salt marshes and pine woods on the 25-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail, formerly the Old Colony Railroad right-of-way. Check out Revolutionary War sites on the Minuteman Bikeway that starts in Cambridge and rolls right by Lexington Green. Cycle across the Connecticut River on an old Boston Maine bridge on the Norwottuck Rail Trail. And be sure to take your bikes to the Ashuwillticook, and enjoy the great views of Mt. Greylock and the Hoosac Mountain range. If you're into fixed base bicycle touring, try Ride Noho.

Route:
From Cambridge Street Starbucks to Staniford to Causeway past TD North Garden across North Washington turns into Commercial Street then right on Hull (one block steep hill) to Copps Hill Burial Ground. After ceremony down Snow Hill to Charter Street to Commercial that turns into Causeway. Around TD Garden right on Lomasney Way turns into Nashua Street then out along the Espanade all the way to Harvard Bridge. Cross bridge. Diagonal left into JFK Park. Cross small JFK park and follow signs for Alewife/Bike path up as far as James Street slight right off of Brattle. Then Mason Street off of James one block to Cambridge Common. From Cambridge Common go on Concord Ave all the way down and then around the Fresh Pond Mall, over the railroad bridge and to a small path that gets us on to the Minuteman Bikeway. But instead of going all the way out on the Minuteman in a few hundred yards we take a nice little cut to the right on a new boardwalk over some marshes. This is the Alewife Greenway. This goes almost all the way to the East Arlington Prince Hall Cemetery. Keep on the Greenway until it ends, then left on Cross Street and right immediately through small park to Waldo. From there right turn on Marathon and then at Broadway jog left to Gardner. Down Gardner several blocks and the Cemetery is on the left. This route avoids a lot of traffic and gets us a nice scenic route.
